Dj Services Contract: Template and Key Clauses (2026)
A DJ services contract is the written agreement between a disc jockey and a client who is booking music for an event. It fixes the date, the hours, the fee and what happens if something goes wrong, so a wedding or party does not fall apart over a misunderstanding. If you perform at events for money, a short written contract protects both you and the client. This page gives you a plain template you can copy, then walks through each clause so you understand what it does and when to change it. This is general information, not legal advice. Contract law and consumer rules vary by country and by state, so confirm the local position for anything high value or unusual. ## A DJ services contract template you can copy ``` DJ SERVICES AGREEMENT Date: [date] DJ / Company: [name, trading name, contact] Client: [full name, contact] 1. Frequently asked questions
- Do I need a contract for a small DJ gig?
- Yes. A short written agreement is worth it for any paid booking because it fixes the date, the hours, the fee and the cancellation terms. Verbal bookings are where disputes start, especially with friends. A one-page contract and a deposit protect both sides and cost you nothing but a few minutes.
- Should the DJ deposit be refundable?
- A booking deposit is normally non-refundable because it holds the date and stops you taking other work for that slot. State clearly that it is non-refundable and set out what else the client owes if they cancel close to the event. In some places a deposit must be a genuine estimate of your loss rather than a penalty, so keep it reasonable.
- Who is responsible for music licensing at the event?
- In many countries the venue holds the public performance licence that covers recorded music played to guests, not the DJ. Do not assume this. Ask the venue, and if the client is expected to arrange it, write that into the services clause so there is no gap on the day.
- How do I handle overtime requests on the night?
- Agree an overtime rate in the contract, usually per 30 or 60 minutes, so that if the client wants you to keep playing the price is already set. Note that the venue curfew may stop you regardless, which is why the performance hours and any curfew should be written down in advance.
